Royal Canadian Mounted Police performed a boat inspection on the St. Marys River on June 3, which led to two arrests and a seizure of 13 grams of cocaine and a boat and trailer reported stolen years ago.

RCMP Constable Dan Chevalier said on that day an RCMP Boat performed a routine inspection of a 17-foot Lund fishing boat.

Chevalier said while interviewing the boat’s two occupants — one male, one female — officers determined that the boat had crossed into American waters and returned and a more thorough customs inspection was deemed warranted and 13 grams of cocaine were found.

Officers then noticed that the boat was not displaying a proper identification number and it was brought back to Bellevue Marina, said Chevalier.

At the marina, officers checked the serial number of the motor and located the identification number of the boat and they were both determined to have been stolen, along with a boat trailer, from Napanee, ON years earlier.

Chevalier said both Greg Smith, age 38, and an unnamed female from Sault Ste. Marie were arrested.

The female was released unconditionally and Smith was released on bail and will appear in court in Sault Ste. Marie on July 17, said Chevalier.
