Classroom cuts: Will your school be affected?

Last night, the Algoma District School Board announced preliminary plans to cut 40 regular classrooms from Grade 1 through OAC.

The plan is conditional on final confirmation of Ministry of Education funding and any significant changes in school enrolments.

The following list of decreases or increases at each school applies only to regular classes.

Teachers are being also added in some specific programs. To learn more about that, click here.

There may also be an attempt to consolidate the cutbacks by closing a school.

Board chair Wanda McQueen commented last night that the reductions in regular elementary classes, 17.5 classes, add up to the equivalent of two schools.

It's time to "be really serious" at looking at further school closings, McQueen said.

Here's a list of how the cutbacks are expected to affect schools in your neighbourhood:

Classroom cuts - secondary schools

The following list of secondary school class reductions is a very rough approximation.

Actual cuts have not yet been announced, but last night the Algoma District School board did approve numbers of program sections for each school.

The following is based on any rise or decrease in program sections, and the assumption that each Algoma secondary school teacher will teach six sections: Alexander Henry (-1) Bawating (-2) Central Algoma (-2) Chapleau (-0.5) Elliot Lake (-5) Hornepayne (-1) Korah (+1) Michipicoten (-2) Sir James Dunn (-5) W.C.
