NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF SAULT STE MARIE
*************************
The News Release issued by MS Norgoma Board of Directors on May 23, 2019 contains a number of inaccuracies and misinformation.

The Board was told on June 5, 2018 that as of August 31, 2018 its berthing rights were rescinded. On September 24, 2018, Council provided an extension to the Marine Heritage Committee to have a new location for the MS Norgoma finalized by February 1, 2019 and extended the termination of berthing rights to April 15, 2019, or as soon as weather permits, to move the vessel to its new location.

The City continues to offer access to any items and artifacts should the Board wish to do so. It is why the City cleared snow from the entrance in March 2019 so they could gain access to do that.

The City is attempting to work with the Board to make sure the vessel can safely be moved which entails obtaining the necessary insurances and correcting safety issues. The City’s greatest concern is the safety of the public and trying to manage access in a responsible way.

As this is now a legal matter, the City will continue to manage this through the appropriate channels.
