City proposes changing your recycling day

If approved by City Council on Monday, the change will occur in November

Many SooToday readers howled at the placement restrictions imposed when the new trash carts were introduced in July

Those of you who've been complaining you don't have room at the end of your driveway for both your lime green trash cart and your grey split-body recycling cart may get relief at Monday's City Council meeting.

"In some situations, space may be an issue, in particular in winter months with snow accumulation affecting the width of residents' driveways," concedes Susan Hamilton Beach, the city's director of public works.

"In other cases where driveways do not exist, snow banks must be kept clear for the space required in the area where the cart is to be put out for collection."

"The curbside multi-family sector may also be challenged with more than one waste cart being placed at the curb in addition to recycling carts," Hamilton Beach says in a report to Mayor Provenzano and ward councillors.

Many SooToday readers were dismayed at placement restrictions imposed when the new garbage carts were introduced in July.

Beach is now asking councillors to delay recycling collection by one day, meaning you'll have to remember to put your trash out one day and your recycling the following day.

Here's the new schedule she's proposing to take effect in November, when the city starts enforcing winter control parking restrictions:

Garbage collection day New recycling collection
Monday Tuesday
Tuesday Wednesday
Wednesday Thursday
Thursday Friday
Friday Monday

Next week's City Council meeting will be livestreamed on SooToday starting at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
