City police chief requests OPP complete investigation in arrest of off-duty officer

SAULT STE MARIE POLICE SERVICE

Early Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016 the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service received a complaint from a female alleging that she had been assaulted.

As a result of the initial police investigation, a suspect for the assault was identified and arrested.

The accused in this investigation is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service who was off-duty at the time of the incident.

Constable Jarrott Forsyth, a nine-year veteran of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has been arrested and charged with assault.

Forsyth is presently suspended from duty pending the completion of the investigation.

“It is important that an investigation into the criminal conduct of our member be seen as fair, transparent and impartial by both the accused and the public,” stated Chief Robert A. Keetch. "As a result, I have formally requested through the Office of the Commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police that he assign members of the OPP to complete the criminal and Police Services Act investigations into this allegation."

As this matter has now been turned over to the Ontario Provincial Police there will be no further comments or press releases made by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
