Permitted uses of the old Steelton Senior Citizens Centre at 235 Wellington Street West include apartments, a place of worship or a residential care facility

City Council will be asked Monday to declare the Steelton Senior Citizens Centre as surplus and to offer it for sale.

The property at 235 Wellington Street West is zoned traditional commercial (C1).

"The main principal of this zone is to reduce regulations and encourage the re-use of existing buildings for commercial and/or residential purposes," says the city's zoning blyaw.

"Existing buildings in older, high intensity commercial areas (Gore, Korah, Steelton) shall maintain present standards, including parking, even if the use changes," the bylaw states.

Permitted uses of the property include:

  • motor vehicle sales and parts dealers

  • personal storage
  • places of worship
  • printing and related support activities
  • repair and maintenance services
  • residential dwellings
  • single detached dwellings
  • semi-detached dwellings
  • duplexes and triplexes
  • multiple attached dwellings

  • warehousing, wholesaling and distribution centres

Steelton Seniors Centre was built in 1906 with a two-storey addition added in 1968.

Total square footage of the multi-level facility is 8,413 square feet.

All seniors' programming was moved in July to the Northern Community Centre at 556 Goulais Ave.

If councillors approve the sale, the property will be advertised once in the Sault Star and on the city's web page.
