Local buses will not operate for the rest of Sunday, Sault Ste. Marie Transit announced at 2:30 p.m.

High winds, blowing snow and zero visibility caused transit officials to stop the buses at 6:30 a.m.

The situation was reviewed at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, when it was determined service could not be safely resumed.

Local taxi operators continued to provide service, although several cases of stuck cabs were reported.

City police said there were few accidents because Saultites heeded warnings and stayed home.

Highway 17 north of Sault Ste Marie and Highway 17 east of the Soo to Blind River are closed due to high winds.

Sault Ste Marie OPP are recommending that no one leave home for any reason.

Environment Canada predicted that the snowsqualls would end overnight, but an additional 5-10 centimetres of snow were expected, tossed by winds gusting to 70 kph. This combination would cause near-zero visibility. Light snow is also expected Monday afternoon.
