'Choking smoke' complicates response to east end fire (4 photos)

The Labelle Avenue fire was called in shortly after 8 p.m.

Burning electronic components from a home office created difficult conditions in battling an east-end fire tonight in the city's east end, said platoon chief Damon Ferris with the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services.

The plastics and other materials which burned in the fire created a great deal of 'choking smoke', said Ferris.

"It wasn't an easy fire to put out, the house sustained a lot of smoke damage," he said.

The office was totally engulfed in fire, said Ferris, while the rest of the house sustained mostly damage from smoke.

Nobody was hurt in the Labelle Avenue fire, he said.

The residents were outside by the time firefighters arrived and were cleared by paramedics at the scene, said Ferris.

Five fire trucks attended the fire, which was called in shortly after 8 p.m. this evening.

"we knocked it down pretty fast," said Ferris.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
