NEWS RELEASE

ALGOMA UNIVERSITY

*************************
Algoma University will be busier than usual on Tuesday, March 11, as an influx of high school and college applicants visit the campus to get a taste of what the University has to offer.

The University encourages local students from both the Algoma District School Board and Huron Superior Catholic District School Board to attend the open house to learn about the benefits of attending their local university.

Out-of-town guests will also be in attendance, with 50 students coming via bus in the University's semi-annual "Get on the Bus" excursion from Southern Ontario.

Each year, the event increases in numbers, drawing in larger crowds of prospective students.

The popularity comes in part from the success of the University's recruiting campaign, which promotes the benefits of attending a smaller university. Student-faculty interaction, small class sizes, and collaborative classroom environments are all part of the benefit of attending Algoma U.

The event is also popular because it allows prospective students the opportunity to experience life at university.

For local students, the attraction of attending Algoma U comes not only from the unique, personalised student experience, but also its close proximity to home.

Local students have the opportunity to play varsity sports, get involved in student government (the Algoma University Students' Union), and travel the world through exchange opportunities, all while living in their hometown.

"Our open house allows students from across the province and within the Sault Ste. Marie area to see firsthand what Algoma U offers," said Director of Student Recruitment, Brent Krmpotich.

"Our students receive an outstanding education, and have access to a variety of opportunities not readily available at larger post-secondary educations, including research positions, teaching assistantships, lucrative entrance scholarships, and one-on-one interactions with knowledgeable faculty."

The event kicks off at 9:30 a.m. in the Speak Easy with a welcome address by the University's President, Dr. Richard Myers.

Students will also be toured around campus and the city, and will be invited to attend a class lecture in their field of interest.

At night, students will head to the Soo Curlers Association to try their hand at curling.
