Saultites need no longer resort to porta-potties if they find themselves feeling defecatious at the downtown Centennial Library.

The portable toilets used over the winter at the front entrance have been removed and newly renovated basement washrooms have re-opened for public use.

The 50-year-old washrooms have new, accessible fixtures and partitions, as well as energy-efficient lighting and freshly ground terrazzo floors.

Members of the library board were flushed with pride Monday night as they inspected the lavatory renovations, the second capital project done at Centennial Library over the past year and a half.

Last year, all carpeting on the library's upper level was replaced.

Both renovations were supported by the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure program.

In a closed-door session last night, the library board discussed moving ahead on its next major project at the downtown library.

Members agreed to meet with city officials to determine municipal expectations for the building under the city's asset management plan.

City Council voted last November to re-name the downtown main library as the James L. McIntyre Centennial Library.

"We thought as part of that we should re-do the lighting outside," said Toni Nanne-Little, board chair.

"We wanted to make sure that if we're going to do the lighting, we should probably do it all at once, in order to be efficient rather than doing everything piecemeal," Nanne-Little told SooToday.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, April 18), Centennial Library will host a 7 p.m. jazz recital by the Swedish-folk-influenced Galen Bundy Piano Trio.

Tickets are $15 and a limited number are still available at Centennial and Korah branch libraries.

Age 19 and up.
