Fire investigation concludes in Cathcart fire, findings turned over to city police (video)

No injuries were reported

3:30 p.m. update:

Fire prevention officer Dan Fraser says the fire service's investigation of last evening's house fire at 172 Cathcart Street has concluded.

Their findings have been turned over to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and the building has been released back to representatives of the owners, said Fraser.

"[City police} are going to make a determination of where they go from there," said Fraser.

The investigation determined that the fire began on the main floor of the house.

"The damages were fairly extensive to the main floor level. There was a little bit of smoke and smell in the second floor apartment," said Fraser.

He said only the second floor was occupied at the time of the fire.

A cat was located on the second floor and was alive when recovered by firefighters, said Fraser.

Original story from 11:00 a.m.:

The cause of a house fire last night on Cathcart Street is still under investigation, says platoon chief Stan Marytnuck of the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services.

The fire service is currently holding the scene, which is being combed by fire prevention officer Dan Fraser.

“We won’t have any further release until he is done,” said Martynuck.

No injuries were reported, though Martynuck said a few people were displaced.
