An inspector with the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services says an investigation into yesterday's house fire on Old Goulais Bay Road is completed and is not considered suspicious in nature.

Fire inspector Dan Fraser said there is nothing to suggest the fire was created intentionally and it could have been caused by an unattended candle the homeowner said was lit that morning.

"Plus, there was a cat in the house. It could be that the cat tipped it or was playing with it," said Fraser.

The first and second floors were heavily damaged by heat and smoke, said Fraser.

Nobody was in the home at the time of the fire, which started just before 9 a.m. yesterday and a cat was rescued from the basement of the house.

Fraser is cautioning residents to be careful when burning candles, especially at this time of year.

"Make sure they are extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed and be careful with holiday decorations," he said.
