The Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians has entered negotiations with the State of Michigan that might result in a new casino in Mackinaw City.

Anticipating state approval for the project, the band has bought land where the King's Inn is currently located, and has also acquired adjacent lots to the south and north.

The project is also expected to have a retail component, possibly including a restaurant and snack bar, Mackinaw City Village Council was told.

The proposed site of the new casino is in Emmet County, where the state tribal gaming compact currently allows just one casino.

The Victories casino in Petoskey currently fills that quota, but the band is seeking to have the compact altered to allow the second casino in Mackinaw City.

Today's edition of the Cheboygan Daily Tribune reports that Mackinaw City Village Council has decided to neither endorse nor oppose the project.
