The fourth cannabis retailer has opened its doors in Sault Ste. Marie, and according to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), there are more applications in the works locally.

John Carroll, owner of New North Greenhouses, along with his son Robert Carroll, recently announced the opening of the duo's first Due North Cannabis Co. location at Churchill Plaza.

According to the AGCO website, Due North Cannabis Co. has also submitted cannabis retail store applications for 719 Airport Road and 695 Pine Street.

The application for the Pine Street location has entered into the 15-day public notice period, where the registrar accepts written submissions from the public before granting authorization.

The public notice period for the Pine Street location ends Feb. 15.

Meanwhile, an official plan amendment and rezoning allowing retail trade at Due North’s Airport Road location was approved by City Council Jan. 25.

A permit from Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would be needed prior to any development on the site.

The Airport Road location would see 500 square metres added to the property for retail trade space, with plans for more greenhouses and a micro-cultivation cannabis facility in the works.

Another retailer, Seven Point, has applied for a cannabis retail store at 625 Trunk Road. The public notice period for that location ended in June 2020.
