NEWS RELEASE

NORTH EAST LHIN

Diane Lajambe, District Manager of the Sault Ste. Marie Branch of the Canadian Red Cross (left), shows off a specialized North East Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN)-funded vehicle designed to transport clients in wheelchairs.

She is shown with Jennifer McKenzie, an outreach officer with the NE LHIN.

The Red Cross is looking for volunteer drivers to make sure seniors get home safely from hospital through the Priority Assistance to Transition Home (PATH) program.

PATH workers accompany frail elderly patients home from hospital to ensure they have the medications, food, and support services in place to begin their recovery.

Since it started in Parry Sound, the NE LHIN has funded the roll-out of the program across the region. In the past two years, 1,800 seniors have taken ‘the PATH’ home. PATH is now available in five communities with plans to expand to 24 communities by the fall of 2016.

In Sault Ste. Marie, the PATH program operates mainly during the day and training is needed to become a driver of this specialized vehicle.

To find out more about how to volunteer, contact the Canadian Red Cross at 705-759-4547.
