RMH Teleservices International Inc. has sent home about 200 employees scheduled to work the day and evening shifts at its Sault Ste. Marie outbound call centre, SooToday.com has learned.

Affected day workers were sent home about three hours into their shift at the Queen Street call centre after two clients asked that telemarketing calls not be made to the United States because of last night's outbreak of war.

Affected night-shift employees were called at home before the shift change and told not to report for work today.

Workers on both shifts were asked to return to their jobs tomorrow unless they receive further notice.

Bob Corsi, senior vice president of operations at RHM's corporate headquarters in Philadelphia, told SooToday News that the two clients requesting no calls today were alone among RMH's North American clients.

Two RMH call centres in New Brunswick were also affected by the clients' decision, Corsi told us.

Of the 13,000 people employed by RMH, only the Sault Ste. Marie and New Brunswick employees were sent home today.

All other RMH operations continues as usual, Corsi said.

In late January, RMH has announced it was creating 117 new seats for between 250 and 300 jobs for telephone service representatives in the Sault.

Top managers from the company's international headquarters will be in the Sault tomorrow to tour the operation with a major prospective new client.

The United Steelworkers of America announced late last year that it's targeting RMH workers in Northern Ontario.
