Firefighters responded to a 50-square foot brush fire on the Rankin Reserve on Sunday evening, said Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services Platoon Chief Richard Pihlaja

A 9-1-1 call came in at 7:25 p.m. and, upon arrival, firefighters discovered a ‘small brush fire’ that didn’t touch any buildings or injure anyone, said Pihlaja.

The fire occurred 500 feet from a parking lot on the 200 Block of Gran Street, he said.

The fire department responded with two pumpers and a tanker, but ambulances were not called to the scene. Batchewana First Nation police were notified but also did not attend at the time firefighters were there, said Pihlaja.

The fire was quickly put out and is not considered suspicious however the cause is unknown, he added.

“It could have spread, the bush is pretty dry right now. My safety message: still be careful. With all the warm weather there still could be bush fires in the area,” he said.
