Break and Enter Unit arrests 275 people in 2018

1,249 criminal charges have been laid, more than $170,000 worth of property recovered, and over $200,000 in illicit narcotics seized

Since January of this year, four officers with the Break Enter and Robbery Unit (B.E.A.R Unit), of The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service have been dedicated to the investigation of break and enters in our area.

To date, these officers have been responsible for the arrest of 275 individuals. Officers have laid a total of 1,249 criminal charges against those individuals for a variety of offences including;

  • Robbery,
  • Break and Enter,
  • Theft,
  • Possession of stolen property,
  • Fail to attend court,
  • Breach of probation,
  • Breach of recognizance,
  • Fraud,
  • Drug offences; and,
  • Firearms offences

As a result of these investigations, over $170,000 worth of personal property has been recovered. Officers are continuing to identify potential victims of theft, but, much of this property has already been returned to the rightful owners.

In addition, these officers worked closely with members of the Drug Enforcement Unit on a number of investigations. As a result of those investigations, over $200,000 worth of illicit narcotics were seized and a variety of drug related charges were laid.

As the New Year approaches our officers will continue to work with our partners and the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie in order to reduce the opportunities for crime and ensure the safety of all those in our city.
