Traffic between the Twin Saults continues to sag, with August passenger car crossings down 14.1 percent from the same period last year.

Figures released today show that the passenger decline was offset by a 10.8 percent increase in commercial truck traffic, but overall bridge crossings were down 10.82 percent from August, 2003.

Over the past four years, there have been only two months when the bridge reported increased traffic.

Those months were March and April of this year.

Here are the August crossings, together with the corresponding changes:

- full-fare passenger cars - 111,108 - down 14.1% - commuter fare - 57,302 - down 6.3% - car pulling trailers - 11,264 - down 16.9% - commercial trucks - 11,947 - up 10.8%

So far this calendar year, 1,247,712 vehicles have crossed the bridge, a decrease of 2.7 percent from last year.

Since the bridge opened in 1962, more than 76,380,000 vehicles have crossed it.
