Algoma University creates ambitious scholarship program for international B.A. students

SAULT STE. MARIE - Algoma University has announced the creation of a significant scholarship program to attract the best and the brightest from around the world into its Bachelor of Arts program.

The scholarships are worth $5,000 and are renewable for up to four years, subject to good academic performance.

Algoma University President Dr. Richard Myers says that these scholarships "will help the University advance toward its goal of becoming one of the most diverse learning communities in the country."

Located on the site of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School, Algoma University has a charter that declares "cross-cultural learning" a key component of its "special mission."

In keeping with that mission, the University has always been home to a substantial number of aboriginal students.

In recent years, Algoma has attracted large numbers of international students as well, but most of them are clustered in programs such as computer science, math and business.

The new scholarship program is designed to attract students into liberal arts subjects such as history, political science, fine arts and literature.

"It's very important to ensure that the benefit of having international students on campus is spread across all programs" says Myers. "Indeed, one could make a pretty good case that the value international students add to the educational process is greatest in the liberal arts. There isn't really a cultural perspective on differential equations, but how you tackle political, ethical or aesthetic questions varies greatly by culture. It's in those areas that Canadian students really benefit by engaging in dialogue with people from other nations. We want to be sure that our liberal arts students have the opportunity to benefit from that kind of dialogue."

The University is making up to five scholarships available in each of its fifteen liberal arts programs.

Once fully subscribed, the program will fund up to three hundred international students - a considerable number for a university with a total enrolment of 1,400.

"It's a good investment" says Myers "because even allowing for the expense of the scholarship, international tuition fees will still generate more revenue than domestic tuition and grants. But more fundamentally, it's an investment in the quality of our programming. We strive to offer our students the best learning experience possible. In the 21st century, that has to be an international and intercultural experience."
