BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION – Batchewana First Nation of the Ojibways, a First Nation with four reserve communities located near Lake Superior in northern Ontario, and GBG Solar Inc., a solar energy development company based in Vaughan, Ont., have partnered to complete the construction of 1.3 MW (megawatts) of solar energy projects across five sites.

The projects include both rooftop and ground mount sites in the Rankin Reserve, located just east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. and in Markham, Ont. The solar projects produce enough electricity to power approximately 200 - 300 homes.

“These solar projects represent our continued commitment to renewable energy generation both on- reserve and off-reserve,” said Chief Dean Sayers of the Batchewana First Nation. “They, along with our wind projects, reinforce our belief in the future of sustainable electricity generation. These solar projects have also provided unique training and employment opportunities for our band members.”

“Partnerships of this kind are essential for the continued development of renewable energy in Ontario,” added Carlo Di Gioacchino, president of GBG Solar. “Our experience in the development of these projects, with Batchewana First Nation in particular, has been very positive.”

The projects were constructed as part of the Government of Ontario’s Feed In Tariff (“FIT”) Program which is administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (“IESO”). Contracts with the IESO are for 20 years commencing at Commercial Operation.
