Are you a student looking for a summer job? Applications are now being accepted for a young entrepreneur program. Summer Company provides grants and mentoring to help high school and post-secondary students start a seasonal business.

Spaces are limited. To apply, please visit here or contact Harleen Puaar, Economic Development Officer with the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, at 705-541-7048 or [email protected].

Summer Company is open to youth between the ages of 15 and 29 who are returning to school in the fall. Approved applicants are given a $1,500 grant and training to help get their business off the ground. Throughout the summer, they’re provided with ongoing mentorship. If all training and reporting requirements are met, participants receive an additional $1,500 grant at the end of the season.

“Summer Company is a great way for youth to delve into the world of self-employment, and it’s all done in a nurturing, low-risk environment,” said Puaar. “This is a wonderful and worthwhile program that teaches the ins and outs of entrepreneurship. Historically, all Summer Company spaces in the region have been filled, so I encourage students to apply as soon as possible.”

Funded by the Province of Ontario, Summer Company is administered in the Algoma District and Chapleau by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation. Since 2010, a total of 107 youth in the region have made their way through the program. To learn more, including eligibility and business-type requirements, go here.
