APH reporting 1 new COVID-related death

There have been 55 COVID-related deaths in the Algoma region since the start of the pandemic, 34 of which have happened in 2022

Algoma Public Health has reported a COVID-19 related death in the region.

The latest death brings the total to 34 since the beginning of 2022 and 55 since the start of the pandemic.

Per APH policy, further details on the death were not released.

APH is also reporting a small increase in the number of hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19, up by one in today's update to a total of 22, and the number of patients admitted for COVID-related reasons, up by two to a total of four.

The number of ICU patients with confirmed COVID-19 remains unchanged from yesterday's update (three), as does the number of ICU patients admitted for COVID-related reasons (one).

Algoma Public Health is reporting a decrease in the number of active cases in the region today. The total number of active cases today is 146, down by 11 from yesterday.

The health unit reported just nine new confirmed cases today and has reported 6,173 since the beginning of 2022 and 8,377 since the start of the pandemic. APH is also reporting 20 resolved cases today.

Note: As of Dec. 31, 2021, the province has limited COVID-19 PCR testing to the highest risk populations. Furthermore, some people with mild or asymptomatic infection may not seek testing. Algoma Public Health states that the numbers of confirmed cases are an underestimate of the actual number of people with COVID-19 in the Algoma region.
