**************************** McGuinty Government improves patient services with investment in medical equipment

$972,000 goes to Sault Area Hospital

Sault Ste. Marie - Our government is improving patient access to medical tests and treatment, and workplace safety with a $130 million investment in diagnostic and medical equipment, which was announced today.

"We have taken action to strengthen our public healthcare system by funding equipment that will improve patient care. Using the new medical and diagnostic equipment we will be able to identify and treat diseases faster and shorten wait times for patients in Sault Ste. Marie." said David Orazietti, MPP

Sault Area Hospital received $972,000 for diagnostic and medical equipment such as computed tomography (CT) scanners, mammography, ultrasound and x-ray machines, and employee and patient safety equipment.

The $130 million is part of the federal Diagnostic/Medical Equipment Fund from the 2003 First Minister's Accord on Health Care Renewal.

$14 million of this funding is being earmarked for employee safety equipment such as ceiling-mounted bed lifts to reduce workplace injury in nurses.

Ontario's total allocation is $193 million for each of three years, starting in 2003/2004 for diagnostic, therapeutic surgical and safety equipment. The $193 million is allocated as follows:

* $33.5 million for diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical equipment in hospitals completing significant redevelopment projects (announced in October 2003)

* $29.5 million for the Princess Margaret Hospital and Cancer Care Ontario to replace and upgrade radiation therapy equipment (announced in October 2003)

* $116 million for diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical and safety equipment

* $14 million for safety and patient comfort equipment including ceiling mounted lifts, electric beds, mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers, patient bathing equipment, nurse call systems.
