Annual unidirectional flushing program resumes

SAULT STE MARIE - PUC would like to advise customers that the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program for 2014 will be starting Monday, May 26 in the east end of the city.

The UDF Program is carried out to remove sediment from within the city’s water system and is part of the company’s Water Quality Improvement Project.

The program will run through the summer and in to the early fall.

Customers are encouraged to visit the PUC website for regular updates and to see a map(s) of the areas affected.

Flushing operations will generally occur between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. during weekdays only.

Customers within the flushing area will receive a notice at their door at least one day before flushing starts.

However, there is a possibility that during flushing activities customers outside of the immediate flushing area could experience discoloured water.

The PUC urges customers not to use any water during the flushing activities on their street to avoid drawing discoloured water into their house plumbing.

If customers do draw discoloured water they are requested to immediately stop using water until PUC has finished flushing activities on their street.

Once PUC has completed flushing the street, affected customers should flush a cold water tap (preferably in a laundry tub without screens or filters) for up to 15 minutes maximum to clear the lines before calling PUC.

Do not use a hot water tap because it could draw sediment into your hot water tank.

If the water does not clear up after 15 minutes of flushing, wait 30 minutes and try again.

If the water does not clear up after two 15 minute flushing cycles, please call PUC Customer Service at 705-759-6522 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 705-759-6555 at all other times.
