The Elliot Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police got an award yesterday.

The Canadian Automobile Association Central Ontario presented the detachment with its CAA School Safety Patrol Achievement Award.

The annual award recognizes a police service that lends exceptional support to the CAA school patroller program.

The organization singled out Special Constable Christine Ouimet for dedication to both the patroller program and the patrollers themselves.

The following news release was issued today by the CAA:

*********************** ELLIOT LAKE, ON, - One of the country's largest traffic safety advocates, CAA Central Ontario, presented East Algoma OPP - Elliot Lake Detachment with the CAA School Safety Patrol Achievement Award.

The award was created to recognize police services that lend exceptional support to the school safety patrol program.

Special Constable Christine Ouimet accepted the award on behalf of the Elliot Lake detachment where the school patrol program has been in place for thirty-four years. "The Elliott Lake detachment have exhibited an outstanding dedication to enhancing and developing their CAA School Safety Patrol Program," said Anna Halkidis, traffic safety specialist, CAA Central Ontario.

"But, the commitment and enthusiasm of Special Constable Christine Ouimet has propelled the patroller program in Elliot Lake to new horizons.

"Her leadership and vision has ensured a premier, top of its class, patroller program," she added. Halkidis noted that Special Constable Ouimet has made an outstanding contribution to her community through her dedication - not just to the patroller program but to the patrollers themselves.

She stated that Ouimet was continuously organizing community outings and incentives for her team of patrollers.

Ouimet has also been responsible for expanding the patrol program into Blind River and Thessalon, where she also helps out with training. Halkidis also spoke about Ouimet's work ethic at the annual School Safety Patrol Officers' Training Camp.

"She is one of the officers who is responsible for the success of this event. The patrollers migrate to her because of her heart and commitment to the program," said Halkidis. Halkidis presented a $1,000 cheque to the East Algoma OPP - Elliot Lake Detachment to be used in the safety patrol program and a commemorative wall hanging for being a partner in one of the most successful safety programs of its kind in the country.

The CAA School Safety Patrol Program was first developed in Canada in 1929 when automobiles were quickly rising in popularity and children aged 4 to 14 were being struck by vehicles at an alarmingly high rate.

The program protects and educates young children in safe street-crossing practices and bus safety practices. In its 75 year history the school safety patrol program has been credited with saving more than 70 people from serious injury or death.
