************************* Downtown student residence opens Algoma U students to move in Saturday
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - (September 3) - Algoma University's newest student residence will open its doors on Saturday. The Downtown Student Residence will become the home of 26 upper year Algoma University students this weekend, bringing a new chapter to the stories of both the university and downtown Sault Ste. Marie. A record number of students are moving into Algoma University residences this fall, as 134 students will be making Algoma U's three residences their new homes this weekend.
"This is the largest incoming residence class we've had, and our staff have been working hard over the summer to ensure that each new resident feels welcome and comfortable in their new surroundings," said Tom Mauro, director of ancillary operations at Algoma University. "Each student moving into residence will receive a welcome package and have the help of volunteers to move their personal belongings into their rooms. Our students are eager to move in and excited to be adding to the cultural fabric of our downtown core." Downtown businesses are excited to see the influx of students downtown. "The Downtown Student Residence will add to the revitalization of the downtown area," says Anna Boyonoski, manager of the Downtown Business Association. "Our members are excited to see this type of growth in our neighbourhood." Construction continues at the old Windsor Park Hotel, which will house not only the new residence, but also a Fine Arts and Music Education (FAME) Centre, and a new medical practice which will serve Algoma U students.
The medical practice will begin operations later this fall, while the FAME Centre is slated to open in 2012.
