Algoma schools receive two Teach Grants

Two schools from Algoma District School Board received Your Neighbourhood Credit Union (YNCU) Teach Grants, recognizing the efforts of the schools and teachers in the service areas

Two schools from Algoma District School Board received Your Neighbourhood Credit Union (YNCU) Teach Grants, with the voting period taking place in April. 

These grants recognize the work and efforts of the teachers and schools.

Queen Elizabeth Public School was nominated for a $5,000 grant. In the classroom category, the nominee for the $1,000 grant was Melissa Euale, Grade 4 teacher at F.H. Clergue French Immersion School.

Algoma District School Board is pleased to share that two of our schools are recipients of Your Neighbourhood Credit Union (YNCU) Teach Grants. These grants were established by YNCU to recognize the efforts of the schools and teachers in their service areas. As they shared on their website “Lockdowns and school closures were a harsh reality of the pandemic. Even during the toughest times, teachers and schools found a way to be resourceful while navigating a new way of learning. They continued to provide a safe and supportive environment for their students, going above and beyond to ensure they continued to have access to quality education be it in the classroom or virtually.”

Throughout the month of April, YNCU opened a nomination and voting period. Principal of Queen Elizabeth Public School David Dick was pleasantly surprised to learn that the school is the recipient of a $5,000 grant, money which can be used for student activities. Unbeknownst to Dick, an appreciative parent nominated the school, sharing in their nomination letter the following: “Regardless of the medium, Queen Elizabeth Public School teachers were able to engage their students in meaningful ways and go above and beyond, making time to be there and find ways to bond when traditional methods weren’t available. Additionally, the administration staff and principal have gone over and above regarding safety, being sure to check in with parents when policies change, or when there is potential for illness in the school.”

In the classroom category, the recipient of the $1,000 grant is Melissa Euale, Grade 4 teacher at F.H. Clergue French Immersion School. In her nomination letter, Mme. Euale was described as a caring and passionate teacher. “Mme. Euale genuinely enjoys teaching, mentoring, and assisting the students of F.H. Clergue, and cares deeply about the needs of the students in her class. She makes every effort to make sure her classroom meets the needs of all her students, even though teaching methods have changed drastically throughout the pandemic. Mme. Euale is always going out of her way to make her classroom a positive learning environment for everyone, particularly children who have additional learning needs…and spends countless hours in her classroom outside of school time to make it a positive learning environment. She is passionate about teaching diversity and acceptance in addition to the curriculum.”

Algoma District School Board is grateful to YNCU for creating these opportunities to acknowledge the many deserving schools and classrooms in our communities. We are also thankful to our school community members for recognizing Queen Elizabeth Public School and F.H. Clergue’s Mme Euale. ADSB is proud of all staff and students who have shown dedication and adaptability within an often-changing environment, never more so than over the past couple of years.
