Algoma Public Health has reported two new hospitalizations and 52 new cases of COVID-19 today, however, that total is underestimated due to limitations in who can get tested.

Of these new cases, 10 were tied to close contact with known cases of COVID-19, seven of those were outbreak related.

Eight of the new cases are from an unknown source of infection and 27 are still under investigation.

There are currently 13 people in hospital with COVID-19.

APH administered 435 tests today, which means the positive rate in people that were able to access testing is 12 per cent.

In the past two weeks there were 240 cases of COVID-19 reported in Algoma.

Of these, 58.7% were in unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals, and 41.3% were in fully vaccinated individuals.

Note: As of Dec. 31, 2021, the province has limited COVID-19 PCR testing to the highest risk populations. Furthermore, some people with mild or asymptomatic infection may not seek testing. Algoma Public Health states that the numbers of confirmed cases are an underestimate of the actual number of people with COVID-19 in the Algoma region.
