Twin Peaks star Kyle MacLachlan has said he developed a fondness for Sault Ste. Marie when in town filming Giant Little Ones.

The film, which opened Friday on screens in Toronto and Vancouver, sees MacLachlan portraying a gay father estranged from his son (played by actor Josh Wiggins), the son bullied at school after rumours spread he’s also gay.

Speaking to national media, MacLachlan said the Sault reminded him of his hometown of Yakima, Washington.

“It was beautiful,” MacLachlan said.

“It reminded me, kind of weirdly enough, a little bit of my hometown which is in eastern Washington. The neighborhoods. And the style of the houses. The sounds were similar and the smells of the asphalt and the vegetation. Even down to the colour of the bricks of the homes. I was like, ‘Wow, this is sort of like Yakima.’”

MacLachlan, now 60, is most famous for his roles in the TV series Twin Peaks, and films Dune and Blue Velvet, each of those productions coming from the mind of U.S. filmmaker David Lynch.

MacLachlan said he remains proud of his work in Twin Peaks and hopes to work with Lynch again.
