St. Jean Baptiste Day celebrations for local Francophones

A small but festive group of Sault and area Francophones celebrated St. Jean Baptiste Day Saturday at Notre Dame du Sault school at 600 North Street.

St. Jean Baptiste Day, celebrated annually on June 24, is an official holiday in Quebec and is observed outside Quebec as a festival of French-Canadian culture.

Saturday's local festivities included a barbecue, games and activities for children, a tour of Notre Dame du Sault school and live entertainment by Francois Lemieux and his backup band.

Saturday marked the first time local St. Jean Baptiste Day activities were held at Notre Dame du Sault.

Celebrations in past years were held at various lodges in the Sault as well as the Roberta Bondar Pavilion.
