The Sault Ste. Marie Indian Friendship Centre (SSMIFC) and the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres (OFIFC) are embarking on Urban Aboriginal Task Force Phase ll (UATF) research called Urban Aboriginal Communities Thrive (UACT).

One of the objectives of the project is to recognize and honour urban Aboriginal people that have been successful in different paths of life.

A group of community allies that comprise the Community Action Circle (CAC) guides the Urban Aboriginal Communities Thrive (UACT) project.

This year they had selected a group of 16 people to be honoured with OSHKI MINO BIMAADIZIWIN (New Life).

For this occasion, a public reception will be offered on Monday, December 10, 2012 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Urban Aboriginal High School (Alex Muir), 188 Kohler Street.

As part of the research process, the UACT Research Team will also organize other different activities like an elder’s tea on December 12, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 122 East St.

From now until Janurary, 2013, The UACT Research Team will conducting a series of interviews and focus group discussions.

The interviews and the group discussions will take into consideration the history of (SSMIFC), the perceptions of success, different services available to the urban aboriginal community, gaps and the alternatives to improve services.

A document report will emerge in March 2013.
