ALGOMA DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD NEWS RELEASE

********************* The Algoma District School Board (ADSB) took time at their Committee of the Whole meeting last night to acknowledge the impressive accomplishments of students and staff in tsunami fundraising efforts earlier this year.

On January 14, the ADSB presented Hands Across The Oceans, a benefit concert held at White Pines Community Theatre.

The concert came together in less than two weeks.

It included performances from over 300 ADSB students ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and represented dozens of ADSB schools throughout the district.

Every one of ADSB's 51 elementary and secondary schools participated in fundraising for the concert and for tsunami relief.

In total, the Algoma District School Board raised over $41,000, which was donated to Red Cross, World Vision and UNICEF (grand total was $41,190.47).

Individuals who were key in pulling the concert together were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and a keepsake program that included words of praise from Premier Dalton McGuinty who wrote: "Your collective ability to respond to this emergency in such a prompt and positive way is a tribute to your caring nature and commitment to helping others."

The keepsake also included lyrics to a song titled "Take My Hand" that was written specifically for the concert by Korah Collegiate music teacher Peter White.

Those in attendance accepting their certificates included:

- Robert Cole, superintendent of education

- Gord Widgett, producer of the concert and vice principal at White Pines Collegiate

- Susan Barber, musical accompanist and White Pines teacher

- Frank Comery, MC for the concert and teacher at William Merrifield

- Roni Dal Cin, music teacher at Sir James Dunn Collegiate

- Sharon Dick, music teacher at Bawating Collegiate

- Andre Litalien, co-emcee and principal of Isabel Fletcher
