The Sault Airport is reporting 3,170 people passed through the airport this past month.

This marks an increase of over 1,000 from July's 2,112.

In a press release issued today, the airport's development corporation stated air traffic levels have been greatly reduced since the onset of the pandemic. In April, May and June, the Sault Airport reported record-low passenger levels due to COVID-19.

In a news release issued today, the airport's development corporation stated that 2,112 passengers passed through the Sault Airport in July.

The breakdown of traffic levels per month since the onset of COVID-19 is as follows:

  • April: 63 passengers, a decrease of 99.6 per cent from last year
  • May: 69 passengers, a decrease of 99.6 per cent from last year
  • June: 440 passengers, a decrease of 97.5 per cent from last year
  • July: 2,112 passengers, a decrease of 88.5 per cent from last year
  • August: 3,170 passengers, a decrease of 84.8 per cent from last year

CEO of the Sault Airport Terry Bos called the increase from June to July 'encouraging', but noted that the increase did not follow through to August as there was only minimal return to growth.

Bos added that "The airport operation is designed to run on closer to 20,000 passengers per month and 5,000 aircraft movements per month."

Air traffic levels are also down, as Bearskin Airlines is currently operating on alternating weeks of two daily flights Sunday to Friday and four daily flights Monday to Friday. On Sept. 14, Bearskin will be operating two flights Sunday and four daily flights Monday to Friday.

Air Canada Express resumed service to Sault Ste. Marie on June 22 and has increased service to up to two daily flights. Porter Airlines is currently not flying and has extended their flight suspension until Nov. 12.

This is a major decrease in flight options compared to August of 2019 when Air Canada was flying six daily flights, Porter had up to three daily flights, and Bearskin was flying up to seven daily flights.

While the Canadian government has implemented travel restrictions on land crossings for leisure travel, passengers can still enter and leave the country by air.

However, the federal government is still advising that non-essential travel outside of Canada be avoided due to COVID-19.
