NEWS RELEASE

ALGOMA DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

***********************
Elementary

The Sept. 15, 2017 Junior Kindergarten (JK) to Grade 8 enrolment is currently 6,251 students, an increase of 195 students from the projected numbers of 6,056 as contained in the April, 2017 Director’s Report. To accommodate the increase in enrolment, Administration has added seven classes across the Board.

There are 1,239 students currently enrolled in JK and SK for this school year, an increase of 157 students from the projected enrolment of 1,082. The Grade 1 to 8 enrolment is 5,012 students, an increase of 38 students from projected numbers of 4,974 in April 2017.

Overall, JK to Grade 8 enrolment has increased by 110 students from September 2016.

Also shared at the meeting was an update on the Grade 7/8 class at Parkland Public School.

Senior Administrators shared that following feedback and discussions with Parkland PS parents, they were not bringing forth a recommendation to move the 7/8 class, but rather will leave the class organization at the school status quo for this school year, with the intent of engaging the school community in a conversation in spring 2018 about future options. This option was the preferred one shared by parents and senior staff were able to rework some budget items to accommodate the request.

Secondary

The projected enrolment in April 2017 for the Regular Secondary Program was 2,957 students. As of September 18, 2017, there are 3,045 students registered.  This equates to an increase of 88 (head count) students at the secondary level.

The Algoma Education Connection (AEC) includes students enrolled in Kina Awiiya (formerly Urban Aboriginal), Sault College Connection and Prince Charles Secondary School. AEC currently has a total enrolment of 223 students. These programs are still enrolling students and the numbers may change, as the board continues its Re-engagement Strategy.
