12,505 Saultites, or 17 percent of the City's total population of 73,475, have mother tongues other than English that they still understand, according to the latest batch of data from last year's federal census.

12,505 Saultites, or 17 percent of the City's total population of 73,475, have mother tongues other than English that they still understand, according to the latest batch of data from last year's federal census.

The Statistics Canada analysis of language, mobility and migration, released this morning, shows that 60,980 of City of Sault Ste. Marie residents answered "English only" when asked what languages they had first learned and still understood.

That compares to:

- 3,035 who replied "French only"

- 280 who said "both English and French"

- 9,185 who answered "other languages"

Mobility status, place of residence one year ago

- 63,360 of us lived at the same address one year ago

- 8,970 lived within the same province or territory one year ago, but changed addresses

- 410 Saultites lived in a different province, territory or country one year ago

Mobility status, place of residence five years ago

- 46,050 lived at the same address five years ago

- 22,825 lived within the same province or territory five years ago, but changed address

- 1,105 lived in a different province or territory or country five years ago
