11 new fires in the northeast region, including one in Wawa area

Seven are located in Cochrane, with others in Wawa, Timmins, Sudbury and Kirkland Lake

11 new fires have been confirmed in the Northeast region this afternoon, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services stated in a release issued today:

  • Cochrane 9 is 1.5 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located north of Lake Abitibi.
  • Cochrane 10 is 0.1 of a hectare and not under control at the time of this update. This fire is located west of Gardiner.
  • Cochrane 11 is 1 hectare and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located northwest of Tweed Lake.
  • Cochrane 12 is 2 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. This fire is located near Tweed Lake.
  • Cochrane 13 is 80 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located south of Kesagami Lake.
  • Cochrane 14 is 0.1 of a hectare and not under control at the time of this update. This fire is located within Kesagami Provincial Park.
  • Cochrane 15 is 1.6 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located northwest of Lake Abitibi.
  • Wawa 3 is 0.5 of a hectare and not under control at the time of this update. This fire is located north of Missinaibi Provincial Park.
  • Timmins 9 is 0.5 of a hectare and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located North of Shinning Tree.
  • Sudbury 47 is 0.8 of a hectare and being held. This fire is located southeast of Anstice.
  • Kirkland Lake 7 is 0.3 of a hectare and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located north of Virginiatown.

Currently, there are eleven other active fires in the Northeast region. Of these, three are not under control, two are being held and six are under control.

  • Sudbury 42 is 51.2 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located northwest of Wanapitei Provincial Park.
  • Chapleau 3 is 2 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. This fire is located near Rice lake.

Fire of Note:

  • Kirkland Lake 6 is 65 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located northeast of Browning Lake and west of Holmes Lake. Four crews and two overhead staff have been assigned to this fire. Air attack has been utilized June 17 and 18 to aid suppression efforts.

The fire hazard in the central and northern portion of the region today ranges from high to extrem, while areas in the southern portion of the region, as well as the far north, are showing a low to moderate hazard.
