Jazz Sudbury is beginning its annual search for talented up-and-coming Ontario jazz musicians ready to play the main stage of the Jazz Sudbury Festival this September.

Jazz Sudbury’s Emerging Artist Showcase opened for submissions April 6 and will remain open until May 4.

“The goal of the emerging artist showcase is to give emerging artists the opportunity to break into the festival circuit and work alongside established musicians,” said festival director Ashlyne Botelho, in a press release. “Our focus this year is to provide artists with additional mentorship opportunities through partnerships with other local arts organizations.”

All performers who play in the jazz genre (soul, funk, blues, swing, etc.) whether they are a band, a duo, or a solo act are invited to showcase their talent and submit a three to five minute video performance to the Jazz Sudbury Facebook page for the chance to earn a spot in the festival lineup and a $1,000 grand prize.

Jazz Sudbury hopes to once again find exciting emerging acts from the region and throughout the province.

The three finalists will be determined by a panel of industry experts. These finalists will be invited to perform at the Emerging Artist Showcase in front of the judges on June 9.

Following a final decision based on a combination of video submissions and live performance, the Emerging Artist Showcase winner will be announced. They will share the stage with festival headliners at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre in September.

Last year’s winners were Jamie Dupuis and Zak Martel, a local Sudbury duo who won the judges over with their unique guitar stylings incorporating Jazz and World-Fusion.
