SAULT STE MARIE, MICH - On Tuesday, July 11, Bayliss Public Library is pleased to welcome Marty Achatz, the 2017-2018 U.P. Poet Laureate, to its Superior Poetry Café as featured poet.

Marty is an Ishpeming native. He holds a Master’s Degree in Fiction and an MFA in Poetry from Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

Currently, he is a Contingent Professor in the English Department at NMU, where he has served as Poetry Editor of Passages North.  He previously taught at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

His writing draws upon natural and spiritual motifs and is deeply grounded in the Upper Peninsula. He has published a book of his poetry, The Mysteries of the Rosary, and his work has appeared in various literary magazines.

He has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and he was awarded third place in the William J. Shaw Memorial Prize for Poetry. In 2015 he was a finalist for U.P. Poet Laureate.

Marty Achatz feels that poetry is especially important right now: “It really is an art form about truth, and in this day and age, in this time right now, I think that we need people who are reading poems and speaking the truth.”

After his 7 p.m. reading, there will be an open mic where the public may read or perform their own work.

His poetry book will be available for purchase and signing. The Friends of Bayliss Library will provide refreshments.

Bayliss Library, a Superior District Library, is located at 541 Library Drive in Sault Ste. Marie. For more information, contact 906-632-9331 or check www.baylisslibrary.org.
