Students challenged with capturing 'a sense of place' through photography (10 images)

Two exhibitions of the student work will take place at Mill Market and the Centennial Library

Grade 12 photography students from St. Mary’s College were presented a challenge – explore our city and create images that capture a sense of place.

As students engaged in the creative process, they listened to feedback from peers and teachers, researched the history of significant places and participated in a recent Jane’s Walk event. Despite being rained out of the James Street portion of the walk, students managed with the help of one of the event organizers, Michael Burtch, to visit and document some unseen gems in our city.

On Saturday, June 2, these students are pleased to host an exhibition of their work at the Mill Market from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. They will be on-hand to discuss their work and gather feedback from the community – What do these images reveal about Sault Ste. Marie? Feedback can be provided in written form or by leaving a comment on the student group’s Instagram account, @smc_photography.

"This project has taught me so much about the heritage our community possesses. It has shown me places I did not even know existed and the beauty present there. I have also realized the importance of sharing my work with other across different platforms,” says student Katryna Chorney of the project.

"Participating in this project has made me realize the vast history of our city.  It has changed the way I see and regard our community. For me, art has always been a place to share our emotions and our stories, this assignment has let me do this in a powerful way,” commented Whisper Harper, another exhibition participant.

During the week of June 11 through 15, the work will be on display at the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library Centennial Branch. Once again, public feedback is welcome and encouraged.

The images seen in the accompanying photo gallery are a small sample of the student work that will be part of both exhibitions. Please plan to visit either the Mill Market on June 2 or the Centennial Library from June 11 through 15 for the full photo experience.
