Approximately 125 dancers with the Sherry Walsh Academy of Dance Arts recently returned home with major awards from dance competitions in Dearborn, Mich. and London, Ont.

Sherry Walsh received the Overall Excellence in Choreography Award for her Senior Jazz Line number, Adrenalin, at the Bedazzled Dance Champions competition May 12-14 in London, while Matthew Caruso received the Young Choreographer Award for Overall High Mark for the Junior Tap routine, How How, at the American Dance Awards competition in Dearborn, April 28-30.

Fourteen dance schools competed in each competition.

The Senior Lyrical large group routine, Can You Hear Me, captured the highest mark overall while the Senior Ballet large group routine, I've Got Rhythm, captured the second highest mark overall and the Senior Modern large group routine, Awakenings, won third highest mark overall at the Bedazzled competition.

At the American Dance Awards competition, Awakenings won the Judge's Choice Award and I've Got Rhythm placed fifth highest overall.

The Senior Lyrical small group routine, Still Hurting, came away from that competition with the highest mark of all small groups.

The Intermediate Jazz routine, Unsighted, earned First Place Overall honours in Dearborn and Third Highest Overall marks in London.

The Intermediate-Senior Tap routine, Soul'd Out, placed Second Highest Overall for Extended Line in London, and The Intermediate Ballet routine, The Labrynth, came away from Dearborn with the Third Place Overall High Mark.

The Intermediate Ballet small group routine, Dreamstate, placed third overall in the small group category in Dearborn.

The Junior Tap routine, How How, (pictured above), won the Overall High Line Award at Dearborn, and the Junior Jazz routine, Streetwalker, placed Second Highest Overall for Class at Dearborn.

The Junior Jazz routine, Rollin', won Third Highest Overall for intermediate small groups in London, and the Junior Lyrical routine, Once Upon a Time, won Third Highest Overall, for junior small groups in London.

Another Cha Cha, the Pre-Junior Tap routine won First Place Overall Extended Line in London and Wanna Get Up, the Pre-Junior Jazz routine won Fourth Highest Overall in the Class category.

The Way That You Love Me, the Pre-Junior Jazz routine, placed Fifth Overall for small groups at Dearborn.

Les Troyens, the Primary Ballet routine, placed Fifth Overall for class at Dearborn, and Wash That Man, the Primary Jazz routine, won Second Overall for large groups in London.

I Got The Beat won Second Overall for large group, Acro, in London and Fourth Place, large group, Acro, in Dearborn.

How Sweet It Is, won Second Place, large group, Specialty, in Dearborn.

Groups won over $1 000 U.S. in scholarships.

The public is invited to view these winning routines at the annual recital at the Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre May 27 and 28.

Both shows will start at 2 p.m. and tickets are available at the community theatre centre box office.
