New dance studio opens in Sault Michigan

Great Lakes Arts & Dance celebrates new studio with ribbon cutting on Monday, May 12

Long-time Sault Ste. Marie resident Dianna George recently opened her own business, Great Lakes Arts & Dance, as well as the newly named Northern Lights Dance Theatre. 

Dianna has a wealth of experience in dance, beginning her Cecchetti studies in Detroit where she attended sixteen hours a week of classes as well as private coaching. 

She belonged to Ypsilanti Area Dancers where she performed a number of full length ballets. 

As a junior in high school she was accepted into the Indianapolis Ballet, a professional ballet company.

In terms of her professional career, Dianna worked as a teacher’s apprentice for five years and choreographed for several musicals in the Detroit Area Schools. 

She has choreographed and performed in several hundred shows, and continues to study in New York City as a teacher for continuing education. 

Dianna has taught dance in several cities over the last decades, but has been especially inspired by students in Sault Ste. Marie.

Dianna is joined by Kaley Darga who has been dancing for the last 25 years.  

She has studied modern, jazz, tap, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, ballet, pointe and african dance. 

She has taught in Sault Ste. Marie for eight years with Dianna. 

She has a dance minor from Lake Superior State University and is dedicated to educating dancers on the history and intent of each dance movement while providing a positive learning environment. 

Kaley is also pursuing her Masters in nursing to become a family nurse practitioner and plans on staying in Sault Ste. Marie.

Both Dianna and Kaley are passionate about the mission of Great Lakes Arts & Dance. 

Their mission is to provide quality dance education with a focus on core curriculum as well as on improving each dancer’s self-awareness and self-confidence in a safe, nurturing environment.

Great Lakes Arts & Dance currently offers a wide variety of dance lessons ranging from ages two to adults. 

Classes include music, dance and tumbling for ages two to four; pre-ballet for ages four to six; all levels for classical ballet; jazz one through pre-professional. 

Classes are also available for modern, lyrical, hip hop, tap, jazz, contemporary, and pointe.

The studio is located at 539 Ashmun Street next to Austin’s Oak. 

There will be a ribbon cutting on Monday, May 12 at 5 p.m. 

Light refreshments and a short preview of the Glad to Dance student dance showcase (taking place on May 17h at LSSU Arts Center) will be offered.
