Lost in the process: The Underground Group's gesture drawings at the AGA

Gesture drawings are drawings that are completed in less than a few minutes. They are part of the process of drawing the human figure. A few quick lines fixing the action of the pose provide the scaffolding for the finished work.

The Underground Group and the Art Gallery of Algoma invites you to understand the process first-hand by going to the AGA and trying life drawing.

On Thursday, March 10th, the Underground Group will provide everything you need to take part of the process, including the model, drawing stand, paper, charcoal and pencils.

You’ll have a chance to draw along with some of the members of the Underground Group, and to experience the joys and frustrations of drawing from life.

The drawing opportunity also doubles as the "Meet the Artists Reception" for the new AGA exhibitiion: "Figure Drawing: The Process", a collection of works by the Underground Group.

The Underground Group has 15 members who range from neophyte to professional artists. These artists regularly meet at Sault College on Mondays from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. They have no formal instruction, but instead simply draw.

The Underground Group's press release claims, "All of us experience good days and bad. We make terrific drawings, and terrible ones. But it is the process, the act of drawing itself, that keeps us coming."

The drawing opportunity and reception begins at 7:30 pm at the AGA. The exhibit will run from March 10th until April 9th at the AGA.

The Art Gallery of Algoma is located at 10 East Street.
