The Great Trail celebration in Gros Cap Marina Park

Come celebrate Prince Township's trails on the national celebration day for The Great Trail on August 26 from 1 to 7 p.m.! Prince Township is partnering with Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy (LSWC), with the generous support of TransCanada Trails to create an afternoon on The Great Trail’s land and water routes to give people an opportunity to experience outdoor activities on greenways, waterways and roadways. The goal of this event is to connect the Trail and the country for a grand celebration of The Great Trail and Canada’s 150th on our sections of the trail.

1 p.m. - Everyone is invited to the Welcome Ceremony at Gros Cap Marina Park with emcee Tim Murphy. A commemorative red maple planted at the Park in celebration of the Great Trail during Canada 150 will be recognized at this time.

2 to 4 p.m. -  Hike and paddle activities depart from Gros Cap Marina Park. These guide-led activities include the Hike on the Voyageur Trail's Gros Cap Loop, and the paddle along the Lake Superior Water Trail's Gros Cap coastline. LSWC and Sault Ste Marie Voyageur Canoe Brigade are leading the paddling component with an interpretive trip on the Lake Superior Water Trail up the coast at Gros Cap. The local Voyageur Trail Association will lead a guided interpretive hike that will follow the beautiful Gros Cap Loop. The guided cycling experience will be led by the Sault Cycling Club. Cyclists are being invited to ride west from Sault Ste Marie to Gros Cap Marina Park on the newly designated Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. Cyclists may be interested in combining the experience with paddling or hiking. All trail participants (paddlers, hikers and cyclists planning to participate in the hike or paddle event) meet at the park at 2 p.m.

Entertainer Tim Murphy will be emceeing throughout the day at Gros Cap Marina Park. And from 4 to 7 p.m., Rusty McCarthy, one of the finest guitarists on the scene today, will be live with a diverse repertoire of pop, folk, jazz, blues and R&B. Trail participants and the public are invited to enjoy the barbecue and fantastic music with Rusty McCarthy. Please bring your own camp chair and reusable beverage container.

Message us to reserve a seat in the Voyageur canoes, and if you are planning to bring your own kayak or canoe. A limited number of seats will be available for participants wanting to experience the Voyageur canoes.
