Ever wanted to write your own memoir? Interested in local authors and musicians? Or just plain enjoy an evening of music and song?

Then you might want to head to Bruce Mines Community Hall this Saturday, Nov. 24 where Stories in the North will be hosting a full day of events featuring local author Paula Dunning.

The day begin with a writing workshop led by Dunning.

“We’ll talk about how to shape a narrative that uses personal stories to explore broader issues,” says Dunning. Workshop, participants will also explore the various forms memoir-writing can take as well as the differing opinions about truth in memoir.

Dunning’s memoir, Shifting Currents, was published in 2016. It’s a story about she and husband Jack’s move to their farm near Echo Bay in the 1970s. The story follows the young academically and politically oriented couple into the early 1980s as they attempt to “live off the land”.

Following the morning sessions, participants are invited to stay around for free writing and a sharing circle until 4 p.m.

Doors open for the evening show at 7 p.m. where Dunning will read from her works interspersed with musical numbers by local singer/songwriter Jeff Hinich. Complimentary refreshments and a cash bar will be available.

Everyone is welcome to attend either event—no writing experience needed for the workshop.

To register for the workshop, call Rhea McAdam at 705-785-3415. Cost is $40. Admission for the evening event is $10, paid at the door.

Stories in the North is made up of a group of people from the area. Their mandate is to promote reading and writing in northern Ontario. They are funded by the Ontario Arts Council. Visit them at the website and on Facebook.
