LSSU journal Border Crossing holds cover art contest

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - Upper Peninsula and Northern Ontario artists are invited to submit entries in the themed cover art contest for the 2013 issue of Border Crossing, the journal of art and literature at Lake Superior State University.

The contest is only open to residents of Michigan’s UP and nearby Ontario, as part of the mission of Border Crossing is to provide an outlet where area artists may showcase their work.

Last year’s cover art contest focused on the theme of water, and the winning entry was from Sault Ste. Marie’s Jennifer L. Ganzhorn, who submitted Splash.

This year’s contest has a theme of fire.

UP artist Jeanne Mannesto will judge this year’s contest.

Mannesto, originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, holds a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Michigan, with a minor in English and fine arts, and a master's degree from Central Michigan University.

Her strong interest in the natural world has guided her artistic endeavors.

She has exhibited her work in Sault Ste. Marie’s Alberta House Art Gallery, as well as with the EUP Craftsmen, the Les Cheneaux Arts Council, at the Algoma Fall Festival of the Arts, and in the Kenneth J. Shouldice Library art gallery.

For this year’s cover of Border Crossing, artists should submit work inspired by, or work which inspires reflection upon, the theme of fire.

“The water-themed cover art contest last year was such a success that we decided to go with another elemental theme this year,” says co-editor and LSSU English professor Julie Brooks Barbour.

The first prize winner will have his or her work appear on the cover and receive an installation and showing of his or her artwork during the 2013 issue's launch party and reading.

Second- and third-place winners may also be published inside the issue.

Any medium is welcome, as long as the digital representation submitted can be featured in black and white.

“We’re most interested in work that represents this region, or the spirit of this region, in new and exciting ways,” says co-editor and LSSU English professor Mary McMyne. “The way you choose to address the theme of fire is up to each individual artist.”

The deadline for the contest is April 2, 2013.

There is no entry fee.

Artists interested in entering the contest should read the full submission guidelines and submit work through Border Crossing’s online submission manager, located at submishmash.

Apart from the cover art contest, Border Crossing also accepts general submissions of visual art from U.P. and Northern Ontario artists.
