Comedy Guild celebrates Canada's favourite Anne with an 'e' (12 photos)

Anne of Green Gables opens Thursday and runs until Sunday

The Musical Comedy Guild’s production of Anne of Green Gables opens Thursday evening at the Sault Community Theatre Centre and runs until Sunday, Nov. 26.

With Timothy Murphy in the director’s chair, the production features Moira Boucher as Anne (with an ‘e’) Shirley and John Fleming as Matthew Cuthbert. Both are familiar faces to Sault theatre-goers.

Boucher’s theatre credits include The Wizard of Oz, Les Misérables, Jesus Christ Superstar, Hello Dolly, West Side Story and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. A veteran of the local stage, Fleming was a chorus member in the Musical Comedy Guild’s 1963 production of H. M. S. Pinafore and has been involved in numerous productions since, including Carousel, Hello Dolly, 42nd Street, Finian’s Rainbow, Brigadoon, Mame, Gypsy, The Pajama Game and Camelot.

An adaptation of LM Montgomery’s novel of the same name, Anne of Green Gables also features Louise Stephens as Marilla Cuthbert, Matthew Stephens as Gilbert Blythe, Penny Gribbon as Mrs. Rachel Lynde, Aeva Goodship as Diana Barry, Avery Hemsworth as Josie Pye, and Elizabeth Alloi as Miss Stacy.

The show is part of the Sault's Canada 150 celebration and is produced by Thomas Brandstetter and Leith Harris, with musical direction from Rony DalCin and choreography by Jennnifer Avery.

Tickets for Anne of Green Gables are $40 for adults, $35 for seniors, $25 for students, and $20 for children. Tickets may be purchased at the Community Box Office in the Station Mall or online. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
