NEWS RELEASE

SHOT IN THE DARK

*************************
Shot in the Dark is back! For its third full season the local theatre company will be going for something a little different.

Two musicals (Working and Chicago), three fundraisers for local charities, one concert and a murder mystery dinner theatre are on the program for Shot in the Dark’s 2017/2018 season.

Auditions for the first show of the season, Working: A Musical, will be held on June 7 and 9 at 7 p.m. at The Tech. More information can be found at www.shotinthedarkssm.com. Tickets for all events will be available soon.

Two exciting yet different musicals will be the Main Stage events of the season. Working: A Musical, running Nov. 15 - 18, 2017 at The Croatian Hall, is about family, work and the extraordinary lives of ordinary people.

With songs from Stephen Schwartz (composer of Wicked) and James Taylor, this is a show you won’t want to miss. Based on Studs Terkel’s famous book of interviews with people from all professions and backgrounds, this is a fitting work to bring to Sault Ste. Marie.

Funny and touching, it was one of founder Susan Barber’s favourite shows: it has a lot of heart and reminds us, through songs and stories, why we do what we do, day after day, what makes it worthwhile and how it can change the world.

Chicago, famous for being one of the longest-running Broadway shows of all time, is the planned musical to run Apr. 18 - 21, 2018 at The Baldwin Theatre (The Tech). Adapted into an Oscar-winning film, Chicago features classic songs like All That Jazz and Cell Block Tango. It’s an entertaining take on the media’s obsession with fame, fortune and mis-fortune.

Retired teacher, singer with The Reptiles and well-known local performer Jeannine Jefferson will be co-directing Working with Anthony Aceti. Elliott Nicholson, an up-and-coming local musician, will take on the role of music director.

Shot in the Dark co-owners Cori Murdock and Anthony Aceti will direct the spring musical. Auditions for the spring show will be held in the new year. Keep an eye on Shot in the Dark’s Facebook page for more details.

Three charities will be partnering with Shot in the Dark this season. Habitat for Humanity will be the featured charity for the fall show and Pauline’s Place will take the spotlight in the spring. A special one-time Trivia Night event to help the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library celebrate Canada’s 150th will take place in September.

The Bon Soo Winter Carnival will host Shot in the Dark on its opening night for a free concert titled Broadway Backwards. It will feature songs and performers you will definitely recognize — but with a twist.

Sometimes, actors have a song or a role they long to perform but due to circumstances beyond their control, they are over-looked when the casting is complete.

So for this event, inspired by a sold-out Broadway tradition, all bets are off: men will sing songs usually only reserved for women and ladies will sing the classic songs of leading men. Imagine a deep baritone belting out Don’t Cry for Me Argentina and a soprano rocking out with Old Man River. This concert is a chance to have some fun and enjoy classic tunes in a new way.

Crimson Ridge Golf Course is excited to host the Shot in the Dark family for its first-ever dinner theatre event — a murder mystery where the audience acts as detectives and every laugh leads you to the next clue. Interactive dinner theatre is always unpredictable, hilarious and makes for a memorable night out.

Auditions for Working will be held June 7 and 8 at The Tech at 7 p.m. Working is an atypical show with a strong message: our job doesn't define us as human beings, we all have a job to do that makes the world go round. Variety and diversity are key in casting a show like this.

All ages and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Working teaches us that everyone has something to offer and the casting process will reflect that. Whether this is the first time you audition for anything in your life or you’ve had experience on stage before, this is a show for you. It’s simple and direct, full of real human moments and features leading parts for dozens of actors.

Please prepare a short vocal excerpt — whether it’s the song you sing everyday in the shower or a intensely rehearsed concert piece — and plan on playing some theatre games and working with the script for the directors.
