Algoma Steel hosts annual Family Day celebration (9 photos)

Alongside their families, employees with Algoma Steel enjoyed a day filled with activities, refreshments, and entertainment

Crowds of several thousands circulated their way through the Administration Building grounds of Algoma Steel this afternoon as the company celebrates its annual Family Day festivities.

Algoma Steel employees and their families enjoyed a variety of hands-on activities like train rides, t-shirt colouring, Steelworks bus tours, Tonka land, and much more.

A barbeque lunch and frozen treats were available on-site, and live entertainment was also provided for everyone in attendance.

Algoma Steel spokesperson Brenda Stenta was excited to welcome back the company’s popular family event after the pandemic put a pause on the festivities for the last two summers.

“It’s our first one since 2019,” she said. “We have a number of new employees that haven’t been able to bring their families to the Steelworks, so it’s really nice. Other people who have attended before were really missing it as well. It’s nice to be able to do this again.”

Earlier this week, Algoma Steel’s new CEO Michael Garcia announced a record $151-million profit-sharing payout for 2022.

Stenta says that news was a cause for celebration.

“We’ve had a record year, so it’s nice for everyone to celebrate,” she said. “It’s an appreciation event for the employees and their families.”

Algoma Steel’s family day of fun will conclude at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
