Algoma Music Camp: 50 years of exceptional learning and creating

SAULT STE. MARIE - This year, the Algoma Music Camp is celebrating its 50th anniversary, kicking things off with its annual residential music camp – from July 20 to August 2, 2014, on beautiful St. Joseph Island.

The two-week camp, which attracts campers from around Ontario, Michigan, Illinois, and Louisiana and beyond, offers exceptional professional instruction.

"Our music educators, performers, and support staff come to camp from all over Canada and the US, delivering an amazing learning environment to campers of a wide range of ages and abilities,” said Tony Gartshore, Algoma Music Camp musical director. "The Camp offers a safe place for young people to acquire a life-long love of music-making. We work to inspire young people to realize their individual gifts while at the same time becoming contributing members of the community.”

The rustic farm property on historic St. Joseph's Island, Ontario provides the perfect backdrop for days spent having fun, making music, and building lifelong friendships.

Tuition - $875 includes:

To crown the anniversary, faculty members, former students and current campers will bring their talent to new heights as they present a special performance on August 2, 2014 at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion.

About the Algoma Music Camp

The Algoma Music Camp was the dream of the late Ed Gartshore, a highly regarded Sault Ste. Marie violin and orchestra instructor.

It was his love of watching young musicians develop confidence in their musical abilities that drove him to establish the camp.

Ed’s professional contacts with musicians throughout North America served him in forming a superb faculty.

The result has been the influencing of students, many of whom have gone on to professional music careers.

In 1995 the Algoma Music Camp was one of only 15 recipients in Ontario to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Ministry of Citizenship.

Nestled in the hills on scenic St. Joseph Island, 60 km east of Sault Ste. Marie in Northern Ontario, the Algoma Music Camp has been producing enthusiasm and dedication in its students for over 40 years.
